Hormone Replacement Therapy Q & A

What is hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy is a medical treatment for women suffering from the symptoms of menopause. Menopause is a normal part of your aging process, but the symptoms that develop due to the shifts in your hormone levels can significantly affect your quality of life. Hormone replacement therapy doesn’t stop menopause, but it may provide relief from your symptoms.

Am I a good candidate for hormone replacement therapy?

Dr. Delgado determines if you’re a good candidate for hormone replacement therapy during your appointment. Many women have concerns about hormone replacement therapy due to their association with breast cancer and heart disease. But hormone replacement therapy may actually protect you from some of these chronic conditions that affect you as you get older.

During your appointment, Dr. Delgado reviews your medical and gynecological history and your symptoms. You may not be considered a good candidate for hormone replacement therapy if you have a family or personal history of certain types of cancers, heart or liver disease, or blood clots.

What types of hormone replacement options are available?

Dr. Delgado reviews your hormone therapy replacement options with you during your appointment. Your options include estrogen only, progestin-only, or a combination of both. Some hormone therapy replacement options also include testosterone.

The combination of hormones recommended for you may depend on your symptoms and whether you’ve undergone a hysterectomy. Dr. Delgado may recommend taking estrogen with progestin if your uterus is intact, as it provides protection against endometrial cancer.

Hormone replacement therapy comes in a number of forms, including pills, gel, vaginal suppositories, vaginal creams, and patches.

Dr. Delgado can also talk to you about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, which are hormones made from natural sources that have the ability to mimic the actions of the hormones in your body.

What can I expect during hormone replacement therapy?

Many women experience a significant reduction in their menopause symptoms with hormone replacement therapy. To ensure your safety, Dr. Delgado provides the lowest dose possible for the shortest period of time for optimal relief.

In addition to an improvement in your quality of life, hormone replacement therapy also offers other health benefits and may protect you against osteoporosis, certain types of cancer, and heart disease.
